Most zero-based oral English learners have a common misunderstanding: you need to memorize thousands of words and master grammar before you can speak. I've seen so many people who memorized words for half a year, but couldn't even say "go straight" when a foreigner asked for directions. You don't have to wait until you are "fully prepared" to speak English every day. With the right path, you can speak simple daily expressions in 3 weeks.
01Myth 1: You need to memorize enough words first → Start with survival-level expressions
Frankly, I don't agree that zero-based learners should start with word books. There are only about 200 commonly used expressions in daily life, you can memorize them while speaking. For example, Xia Xia, a 95-generation receptionist, memorized CET-4 words for 3 months but dared not even say hello to foreign teachers. Later she practiced practical sentences like "I'm off work" and "How much is this", and was able to make a complete self-introduction in 2 weeks.
02Myth 2: You need long study hours to make progress → **25-minute frequent short lessons** are enough for speaking English every day
Among the students I mentor, those who stick to learning all have one thing in common: they don't squeeze out long chunks of time, just fix 25 minutes a day to chat with foreign teachers.
To put it simply, the hardest part for adult English learners is to squeeze time. If you force yourself to study 2 hours a day, you will definitely give up within a week. Just follow these 3 requirements when you start:
- Speak at least 10 times per class, even if it's single words plus gestures
- Ask your foreign teacher immediately when you don't know a word, don't be embarrassed
- Spend 3 minutes reviewing the core expressions of the class after class, no need for complicated notes
03Myth 3: It's embarrassing if you can't understand foreign teachers → Prioritize Filipino teachers trained in the Karen Method
Many zero-based learners are afraid of being totally lost in class, but our Filipino teachers are all trained in the Karen Method. They will use gestures and simple words to guide you to speak, and will not use difficult sentences at the beginning. If you feel burned out halfway, don't force yourself, you can check our previous article When You Can't Keep Practicing English Every Day, Don't Force Yourself to find suitable adjustment methods.
Speaking English every day is really not that difficult for zero-based learners. The right path is more useful than blind effort. If you want to try, you can book our free trial class to experience the rhythm of online one-on-one foreign teacher classes.
